Songkran is Thailand’s most important public holiday and celebrates their traditional new year. It takes place from the 13-15th April (the hottest time of the year) throughout the country, but Chiang Mai spreads this out for up to 8 days, making it one of the best places to celebrate the world’s biggest water fight. The streets fill with processions, cultural shows, beauty pageants and thousands of locals and tourists armed with water pistols and powder. The moat around the city centre provides the perfect set up for an incredible and unforgettable cultural experience. Wetter equals better, so be warned not to carry any valuables that can’t take a soaking.
